in a cheap hotel room
in Loja, waiting to catch a bus ride south
to the Peruvian border,

thousands of miles north
on connected land
a grey man waved and smiled
to a crowd given another four years for good behaviour.

Later, we walked to a diner
serving steaks, hearts and other offal
and shovelled it all in
without a bloody word.
